Business

For a town of its size, Aberdeen is surprisingly well positioned to grow both commercial and industrial enterprises that desire a thriving future. The county is equidistant from both Asian and European markets and Washington state was ranked #1 in the country for economic growth in 2018.

Aberdeen is a transit hub for the region and a commercial shopping hub, bringing traffic and customers to the town at a much higher level than is typically seen in a small town. We have convenient access to a nearby deep water port that is a day closer to Asia than any other deep water port on the West Coast.

Of course, you will want to determine if Aberdeen is a good fit for your business or business idea. Here is some of the information you will likely need to make that decision.

Where is Aberdeen, Washington?

We are between the state capital and the Pacific Coast. We have easy access to two international airports, a deep water port, rail services and a local jet-capable airport.

Utilities

We are fortunate to enjoy access to reliable, low-cost electricity and reliable, high-speed internet. Please see our link (above) for additional details.

Labor Market

Aberdeen's unemployment rate is 5 percent higher than the national average and earnings are 27 percent lower than the national average. While some of that can be accounted for by the fact that the area attracts retirees who may neither need nor want a job to enhance their existing income, some of it is due to a need for additional local employment options.

We are fortunate to have a local college in town providing education and training pertinent to the needs of local employers. Our Executive Director also has firsthand experience with remote education options. If you need additional workforce education and training support beyond what can be readily found locally, please get in touch.

Key Industries and Major Employers

Key Industries for the county include Forest and Wood Products, Shipbuilding, Food Production, and Hospitality and Tourism. We also have a lot of artists and musicians in the area.

Major Employers in the County include Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen School District, Grays Harbor College and Walmart, all of which are located in Aberdeen.

Grays Harbor Community Hospital has a main campus up on the hill, but their East Campus is in easy walking distance of downtown Aberdeen. Walmart is just across the river from downtown, about a ten minute walk away.

Grays Harbor College is in South Aberdeen. Locals routinely make the distinction between Aberdeen, East Aberdeen and South Aberdeen due to the city being geographically divided up by the two rivers here.

The part of Aberdeen south of the Chehalis River gets called South Aberdeen by locals. The part of Aberdeen east of the Wishkah River gets called East Aberdeen.

Another major employer, Stafford Creek Corrections Center, has an Aberdeen address. However, as is common for correctional facilities, it has a relatively isolated location. It can be found roughly midway between downtown Aberdeen and Westport.

Wish List

Our Wishlist page talks about things we would like to see happen in our downtown and why. These development goals represent potential business opportunities for you and the page contains additional insider info on the community that you will likely want to know, whatever your business interests.

If you have additional questions about the area that are not answered above, please do not hesitate to contact our office. Serving potential business enterprises looking to move to our downtown is part of our mission as a non-profit economic development company.
