If you value your health
Generally speaking, toxic substances are only "cheap" due to externalizing many of the costs involved, like increased healthcare costs and lost productivity. If you do a thorough analysis of the costs of using such chemicals, they aren't cheap at all.
That's from a comment by me that got the most upvotes of any comment I ever left on Hacker News and it's an observation related to my education in environmental studies. I'm quite proud of it.
I think Downtown Aberdeen probably merits being declared a Superfund site. I have begun thinking that the degree to which I tried to work things out with locals while they intentionally shafted me may reasonably suggest something very bad is happening there, something which may involve illegal dumping of toxic chemicals.
At this point, I'm relieved that I was not hired as Executive Director of the local Main Street America program. And I'm glad Alaska hated me and wanted nothing to do with me when I was considering pivoting one of my economic development ideas and making it into a for-profit business.
There's a great deal of seafood that apparently gets run through a relatively small number of facilities in Alaska and it could be a global medical crisis with no apparent cause and no way to remedy it if those facilities had begun to regularly hire people from Aberdeen, Washington and thereby ended up contaminated with whatever is making the downtown area of Aberdeen, Washington largely uninhabited and uninhabitable.
It's a silver lining of a long, awful personal experience knowing I don't have to wrestle with the dawning horror of what I've likely unknowingly done and whether or not to even try to inform people and look for some kind of remedy given I'm not likely to be believed and if it's a profitable business, do I really want to cut my throat that way?
Knowing me, I would want to cut my throat financially over a situation like that. I'm left feeling like "Dodged that bullet!" about a possible horrifying outcome I couldn't have possibly predicted.
If you value your health:
1. Don't visit Aberdeen, Washington.
2. Don't move to Aberdeen, Washington.
3. Don't hire temporary or seasonal workers from Aberdeen, Washington -- especially if it involves food handling or something else likely to significantly impact human health.
4. Don't do business with the NUTCASES in Aberdeen, Washington. It's probably generally a bad idea.
